Wieloryby i ćmy (Whales and Moths)

A multiple self-portrait and literary tale of the contemporary world.

Far beyond the Arctic Circle, on Spitsbergen, there is a settlement. The old roads are overgrown with taiga, the windows of the greenhouse are smashed. Little remains of the former life – dilapidated sheds, some rubbish, shrivelled tomato bushes. And a cemetery. With ugly tombstones cast from concrete. Under one of them lies the body of a one-year-old girl. His son is also one year old. He stayed in the country, and not so long ago, he used to fall asleep on his lap.
Much closer, in Silesia, there is no longer any trace of the old mill. It was dismantled because it was in danger of collapsing. The house where his great-grandfather was born has also disappeared, and the mine where his grandfather was fatally injured has been replaced by a college. All around, history has scattered bones. Some belong to those who look out from old photographs in the family album.
Distant journeys and close encounters. Observations, comments, reflections. In his diaries, Twardoch weaves the universal with the generational, the historical with the contemporary, and the familiar with the foreign. Wieloryby i ćmy – a multiple self-portrait and literary tale of the contemporary world.
